Hosted by York St John Christian Union
21st - 25th November 2016
“Life is a journey…” It’s full of ups and downs. First steps, teenage heartache, passed (or failed!) exams, leaving home and moving somewhere new. No matter where you’ve come from, who you are or what you believe; we all have a journey. Some are full of adventure while others have rough patches along the way — yet every journey is important.
We’d love to hear about yours…
Journey Lunches are all about food for thought on the big questions about the Christian faith. Followed by a time to share your thoughts and questions over a coffee — oh, and there’s a free lunch too!
1:05pm – 1:55pm — Journey Tipi
Free lunch, short talk, Q&A and a pastry to ponder over…
Atheist, Richard Dawkins claims that the Bible is a “great bit of literature” but surely it’s not even that? A rule book written over thousands of years with a whole load of authors. Surely it’s not even true, never mind being relevant today! Can anybody honestly trust a book like that?
Monday:
Journey Tipi — 1:05pm – 1:55pm
It’s as obvious as the apple falling from the tree, science and Christianity can never work together. In a world of discovery and ground breaking technology developing every day, how on Earth could someone believe in God? Can God and science ever really go hand in hand?
Tuesday:
Journey Tipi — 1:05pm – 1:55pm
Whenever we scroll through our newsfeeds, we are constantly seeing stories of pain and suffering. At some point, we will all experience the effects of a broken world — if we haven’t already — and so where in the world is God when this happens? Forget God being good, how can He even exist with all of this going on? And how can Christians still have a faith in a good God when so much bad happens?
Wednesday:
Journey Tipi — 1:05pm – 1:55pm
Sun, sex and a big suspicious God? University is so much fun, why would I swap sex and alcohol for drinking tea and singing hymns with Doris at church? That sounds like student life down the drain! Is God just one really strict parent? And can any Christian ever enjoy uni life when they’re missing out on so much?
Thursday:
Journey Tipi — 1:05pm – 1:55pm
What happened the days after Jesus’s death? It’s been a question investigated and debated by historians, private detectives and high court judges for over 2000 years. Surely the answer is obvious? People don’t rise from the dead; it simply doesn’t happen. Surely, to believe that, must be blind faith?
Friday:
Journey Tipi — 1:05pm – 1:55pm
As the winter nights draw in, Journey Nights sees five people sharing their unique journeys. A most wanted convict, a TV celebrity and a student are amongst those who will be sharing how Jesus has changed their lives. Then we will take a look at how the same man transformed the lives of those who met him 2000 years ago. Chatting over hot drinks, sweet treats and live music in the cosy Journey Tipi — how better to spend those chilly November evenings?
7:00pm – 9:00pm — Journey Tipi
RAF fighter pilot Ian Ferguson recounts the incredible story of the day his life was spared by 5 seconds. Travelling at 600 mph, at only 250 ft Ian ejected from his Phantom FGR 2. One near death experience later, Ian now has a very different outlook on life, faith and everything in between.
Monday:
Journey Tipi — 7:00pm – 9:00pm
Once a well respected Major in the British Army and working as the director of music for the Coldstream Guards, Ian’s life fell apart when it was discovered he was having an affair with the senior chaplain’s wife. From one of the finest bandmasters in the country to a prison sentence and instant dismissal, Ian shares how he kept going through the dark years that followed.
Tuesday:
Journey Tipi — 7:00pm – 9:00pm
Warren has spent most of his life in the eye of the media. Having found fame as ‘Ace’ from the hit show Gladiators, he then went on to be engaged to Katie Price and appeared on numerous chat shows. The fame and fortune became addictive yet Warren shares how finding faith has now changed his life.
Wednesday:
Journey Tipi — 7:00pm – 9:00pm
A life spent in and out of Prison, once labelled by the Home Office as one of the six most dangerous men in Britain, two counts of attempted murder, numerous GBH attacks, a strife for danger and then a day which flipped his life upside down. Shane speaks openly and honestly about where he’s come from to the guy he is today.
Thursday:
Journey Tipi — 7:00pm – 9:00pm
Alice is a student; an amazing student. Last year she was voted Most Committed Society Member by the SU for her dedication despite having a rough journey over the last few years. She has moved to university, witnessed her Mum’s battle with cancer and coped with the uncertainty of her future at YSJ. Despite all of this, she still says her faith impacts every area of her life… Her journey is really something to hear about.
Friday:
Journey Tipi — 7:00pm – 9:00pm
People make a journey special and so what better way to ponder over what has been said during Lunches than to chat about it? Whether you’re wanting a place to voice your questions, share your thoughts, challenge or maybe to just to enjoy a coffee, Journey Coffeehouse looks to provide the perfect setting for just that — and maybe the odd pastry too.
Come and enjoy Lunches and Nights in the Journey Tipi or feel free to grab a coffee and take a break from work on one of the comfy sofas. We hope that throughout the week, the Tipi will feel like a home on campus. You’ll be able to find it outside the new SU… It will be hard to miss!
